First Aid - at the touch of a button
On the7th March 2011, Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh launched SafetyMate - Ireland’s only interactive and bilingual First Aid device, at the Foras na Gaeilge headquarters in Dublin. This handheld First Aid device delivers step-by-step audio instructions in both Irish and English. It gives up-to-date First Aid and CPR information for over thirty types of First Aid emergencies and is ideal for use in schools, sports clubs, offices, industrial settings and homes.

At the touch of a button, SafetyMate will help people deal with emergency situations from choking to seizures to bone injuries to CPR. Through collaboration between SafetyMate and their language partners Foras na Gaeilge, users will have the choice of receiving instructions either as Gaeilge or in English.

“This is a product that every sports club, school and office should have” said Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh at the launch of SafetyMate today. “I’ve no doubt that sports clubs in particular will find this really useful and that it will become an essential part of their first aid equipment. I commend Safe Aid on providing such an innovative new product to the Irish market” he said.

The inspiration for introducing SafetyMate to Ireland came about when Marion Morrissey of Safe Aid Training, a Limerick-based health and safety training company, experienced the near-death of her infant daughter and realised how ill-equipped so many people are when it comes to dealing with medical emergencies;

“As a trained nurse, I knew what to do in my child’s situation, but if people don’t know how to respond to medical emergencies, the situation can become fatal in a matter of minutes” said Marion. “SafetyMate guides you through the situation by telling you exactly what to do and just as importantly, what not to do” she said.

“The Irish language is constantly adapting to the most up-to-date technology and SafetyMate is at the forefront of the latest technology.” said Éamonn Ó hArgáin, Director of Developmental Sevices at Foras na Gaeilge. “We’re proud to be associated with this product which is a pioneering example of how bilingualism can be part of everyday life” he said.

SafetyMate adheres to the American Heart Foundation CPR guidelines which are followed by the Irish Heart Foundation. The unit is also future proof as all you need to do is insert a new SD card if health and safety guidelines change. The SafetyMate device costs €160 plus delivery and can be ordered online at www.safetymate.ie or by phone at 061 502300.
